Development of the MP-153 began in 1999. The project managers were Konstantin Evseev and Alexander Kalugin. In order to adapt the IL-81 for 12/89 ammunition, serious reworking of the structure and replacement of some technical units was required.

Italian strength experiment
Specialists of the Italian magazine about weapons checked the strength of the MP-153: within a few days, 50 thousand shots were fired (the average hunter makes 200 shots per year). In the process, the barrel was heated to the maximum temperature, so forced water cooling was used (every 200-300 shots). Cleaning of spare parts and technical units took place every 800-1200 shots.
With a reduction in cooling time, after 20 thousand shots, the soldering of the aiming bar began to move away from its original location. For the safety of the shooters participating in the experiment, the sighting mechanism was removed. Thanks to setting the valve to operate weak ammunition, the automation was kept at a stable level. At this stage, the first flaw appeared: not all of the spent cartridges went out through the window, but were easily removed with a spontaneous movement of a finger.
For 5 days they made 50 thousand shots, which affected the state of the MR-153. There was no chromium layer left in the barrel channels, traces of the carriage passage were clearly observed inside the bolt carrier. The main surprise - the weapon continued to work stably. Italian gunsmiths were able to prove that with proper maintenance, the service life could be 50 thousand shots.
