For the first time in almost 30 years, the US Navy sent a carrier group led by flagship Harry S. Truman to the Arctic region, thus demonstrating its claims to occupying a dominant position in the region.
One of the most modern ocean "airfields" entered the waters of the Norwegian Sea last Friday. The last time American aircraft carriers visited this part of the world's ocean in 1991.
During the cruise, the aviation group stationed on board and the ships accompanying the aircraft carrier will take part in the large-scale NATO Trident Juncture NATO exercises, which will be held in late October - early November 2018.
The maneuvers will be attended by 14,000 troops from the United States and 36,000 NATO troops, more than 50 aircraft and 65 ships, as well as 10,000 units of automotive and armored vehicles.
Alliance military strategists make no secret of the fact that maneuvers are being held to demonstrate the joint determination of the Allies to repulse the possible Russian aggression widely discussed in the West.
The fact of a large group of American warships entering the Arctic zone can also be linked to the process of rebuilding the 2nd fleet of the US Navy, which began seven years ago, which began in August 2018. The area of responsibility of the new "old" fleet includes the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean and the waters of the Arctic Ocean.
Oceanic voyage to the Arctic of the American aircraft carrier, even in expert military circles of the United States, is seen as an echo of the Cold War. It is assumed that such a presence of a strike force of the US Navy in this part of the world will be routine, permanent.
