Soviet reconnaissance aircraft R-5 is one of the most common modifications of this machine, designed by Soviet designers under the guidance of N.N. Polikarpov in the late 20s of XX century. The prototype of the aircraft was developed as a multi-purpose machine capable of performing a wide range of tasks depending on the tactical task. More than 5,000 vehicles of this type were in service with the Red Army air forces and were used as reconnaissance aircraft for the next decade.
Creation of the machine P-5 and serial production
The task assigned to the team of the OKB, headed by N. N. Polikarpov, was to create a simple and reliable machine on their own capable of performing a wide range of tactical tasks. The development of the project was completed in 1928, after which the prototype of the aircraft was handed over to the military for detailed study and testing. After eliminating a number of flaws, the design of the aircraft was recognized as suitable for subsequent operation. Since 1930, at Aviation Plant No. 31 in Taganrog, the serial production of a new car, which was produced in a large series, began. The car was produced as a reconnaissance aircraft R-5, an aircraft of direct support for infantry and cavalry R-5SH and an aircraft torpedo carrier R-5T.
In just 11 years from 1930 to 1941, about 6 thousand cars of various modifications were manufactured. The Red Army Air Force was armed with about 5,000 aircraft used to conduct reconnaissance actions and provide fire support for ground operations.
