On the Northern Sea Route will limit the passage of foreign warships

In the coming year, our country will establish a limit for all military naval vessels of foreign countries. They will be able to go along the Northern Sea Route only after prior notification of the Russian border guards.

At the moment, interdepartmental work is underway to improve Russian legislation regarding the operation of the Northern Sea Route. As a result, the principle of prior notification for the passage of foreign warships through the NSR should be approved. All regulations will be ready by early next year.

For several years now, there has been an active work of lawyers in terms of bringing Russian and international law into conformity. And also the coordination of the standards accepted in Russia concerning the seas washed by our country. This activity is aimed at making the area adjacent to Russia peaceful.

In particular, one of the outcomes of such work was the status of the Caspian Sea. A five-party agreement was concluded to prevent incidents in the largest lake on earth.

As recently as August of this year, all the leaders of the countries with the Caspian coast signed the Convention on the Status of the Caspian Sea. It excludes the presence in its waters of warships of other countries.
