It also became known that the intruder aircraft has a tail number 168848. This aircraft is based on Sigonella, the name of the air base stationed on the island of Sicily. This base contains unmanned aerial vehicles, which periodically conduct reconnaissance flights over the Crimea and the Donbas.
When the plane entered the area designated for shooting, the aircraft ignored the warnings and carried out reconnaissance in the area of deployment of Russian military bases in Latakia and Tartus for about an hour. But at the same time, the P-8A "Poseidon" did not dare to enter the airspace of the Syrian Arab Republic.
The American press notes that the P-8A Poseidon could perform actions that were to determine the presence of Russian submarines and the monitoring of the Syrian and Russian air defense systems in the area.
