How Slovenian soldiers froze on the NATO exercises in Norway

Fighters of the Slovenian army who took part in NATO’s greatest maneuvers after the Cold War complained that the equipment didn’t match weather conditions.

Recall, just recently, a large-scale NATO exercise called Trident Juncture - 2018 ended in Norway. For two weeks, the North-Atlantic bloc fighters learned how to fight at different ambient temperatures. A total of 50,000 military personnel from all countries of the unit were involved in the exercises, as well as 10,000 units of ground combat vehicles, in addition to 250 aircraft and 65 ships, including the US aircraft carrier Harry Truman, as well as the US sea lion seals. Slovenia sent 232 troops from a motorized brigade to training battles.

According to RIA Novosti, Slovenian Defense Minister Karl Erjavec assured the fighters and the public that he would conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.

The commander of the Slovenian contingent on NATO exercises, Lieutenant Colonel Uros Trinko, said that the equipment left much to be desired. Slovenian fighters complained a lot about the quality of their boots. Shoes absolutely did not save either frost or moisture.

Fortunately, there were no serious consequences, and none of the Slovenian fighters required medical assistance.

By the way, the temperature range in the area where the exercises took place ranged from -23 to +7 degrees Celsius.

It is noteworthy that the cost of boots, issued to the Slovenian fighters, is 80 euros for each pair.
