The new drug PolySTAT, intended for subcutaneous administration, is able to save many lives of soldiers during the fighting. A unique medicine was developed by American scientists. It contains a polymer that causes blood to thicken. The preparation also contains elements that independently detect external or internal damage in the body and immediately begin to act.
Animal testing
Tests conducted by scientists from the University of Washington were successful. PolySTAT allowed to save the lives of all rats, which previously cut the femoral artery. Healing with standard natural protein was 80 percent less effective: only one fifth of the experimental animals survived.
According to official representatives of the University of Washington, it will be possible to test the drug on a person in 5 years.
Drug action
Researchers say PolySTAT will instantly prevent blood loss and save a person’s life. The drug can be used during a variety of rescue operations or as an emergency medical assistance to victims of road accidents.
Soldiers who were seriously injured during a battle often die before they are taken to a medical facility. The main cause of death is significant blood loss. As soon as the body gets injured, natural platelets try to create a barrier so that the fluid lingers in the body. Sometimes the blood pressure is too high, and this leads to the destruction of the protective layer.
PolySTAT provides good protection against enzymes that break down blood clots. Elements that, under ordinary conditions, are necessary for wound healing, will not interact with polymer bonds. Innovative medicine also does not form blood clots that clog blood vessels.
The drug can be a real breakthrough in medicine, but until its safety is fully confirmed, you will need to perform many tests, including human tests.
