US Navy Improves Nuclear Warheads

The US Navy completed nuclear rearmament. In particular, the nuclear warheads W76-0 were upgraded.

According to official reports from the National Nuclear Security Administration, the W76-0 warheads have been manufactured since the 70s and are used in Trident II D5 missiles. In 2008, the process of upgrading to version W76-1 began. The improvement process was officially completed at the end of January of this year.

Modernization of warheads will affect such an important factor as the extension of their service life. According to forecasts, they can be in the ranks for at least another 20 years. In addition, the new version of the warheads received additional security mechanisms.

Recall, Trident is a family of three-stage American solid-propellant ballistic missiles deployed on submarines. The first generation of missiles was developed in the 70s, the second (Trident II) - in 1990. The missile can carry up to 14 W76 warheads (with a capacity of 100 kt each).
