The USA sees in the artificial intelligence the main weapon of the future

Year after year they have been discussing the use of artificial intelligence for military purposes, some see this as the future of this field, others are confident that the machine does not have the right to decide the fate. The US military was also interested in this topic. Thus, it organized a commission in 2016, which considered this issue, after the Joint Center of Artificial Intelligence was established, which constitutes an important link in the formation of a strong military AI.

It is clear that while the organization "Skynet from the Terminator franchise" is out of the question. The Ministry of Defense issued an application to the US Congress on the financing of the AI Center. The stated amount is $ 1.7 billion, and the implementation of projects is ready for execution over the next six years. US Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shenghen spoke on this topic: "Research in the field of artificial intelligence will change future military operations. The military needs a new approach to AI, allowing you to quickly combine any new developments in the shortest possible time, which will change the usual ways of warfare."

Directions of development of AI in the military industry

Despite the optimistic attitude of the military, there is a large percentage of those who disagree with such views (among which are people related to developments in the AI industry). The counter argument of experts is that a technician does not have the right to decide the question of the fate of people: "Autonomous weapons, machines, rockets and other means of warfare, in which artificial intelligence decides, at least one hundredth of a percent, whether to take a person’s life or not created ".

The defense ministry and the US government look a little differently at this situation. According to them, AI in the future is predetermined place in the military field. Therefore, a program has already been outlined in three main areas:

  • the formation of a system for the operation of artificial intelligence, which will be directed to the Ministry of Defense, in other words, the settlement of the infrastructure for the introduction of AI;
  • improvement of cooperation in AI programs "both within the department and outside"; here we are talking about both US allies, and about commercial organizations, scientists engaged in development in the industry;
  • the introduction of standardized methods of creating artificial intelligence, the formation of AI control tools and subsequently putting it into operation.

Apparently, the American side is set up resolutely, and therefore programs for the development in the field of artificial intelligence will be implemented.
