At the beginning of the coming year, a military communications satellite Meridian will be launched from the Plesetsk cosmodrome. This is the fourth satellite that should assist its fellows to ensure the functioning of a second-generation unified satellite communications system until third-generation satellites enter orbit. And then he must bring the connection of these generations into conformity.
According to the source, the active life of the Meridian satellite in orbit is seven years.
In the coming days, the spacecraft will be delivered to Plesetsk by an Il-76 plane. This will be followed by its preparation and launching into orbit by the Soyuz-2 rocket.
The cost of the contract for the work on the satellite is about 12.75 million rubles.
Recall, according to the order of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, from 2006 to 2014, seven such satellites were launched into orbit. Three of them had problems in orbit.
