NASA publicly announced that the Russian military satellite Kosmos-2430, designed to monitor where and why the ballistic missiles are flying, burned down on the fifth of January in the upper atmosphere of our planet.
According to the command of the Air and Space Forces of the Russian Federation, the Russian military spacecraft, equipped with the Oko missile attack warning system, was de-orbited and burned in the Earth’s atmosphere - as planned.
- The satellite completely burned down in dense layers of the atmosphere over the territory of the Atlantic Ocean at an altitude of about 100 km. The duty forces of the Space Forces of the Russian Aerospace Force of the Russian Federation controlled the descent of the apparatus from orbit at all segments of the trajectory, the Interfax news agency quoted the leadership of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
Recall that the satellite "Cosmos-2430" was launched into Earth orbit in 2007. It was intended to track the launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles from the United States. According to unconfirmed reports, the military lost contact with Cosmos-2430 in 2012-2014 due to the development of a resource by the satellite.
At present, Russia is forming a new space echelon of a missile attack warning system - the Tundra satellites, the first of which was put into orbit in 2015.
