The PXM-4-01 radiation-chemical machine based on the BTR-80 is a Soviet reconnaissance chemical machine created for conducting radiation, chemical and biological reconnaissance of a territory as part of a regiment, division and army. Special equipment was created in the framework of increasing the scale of the activities of chemical troops in the quartering areas of the main military formations of the Soviet army.
Development and serial production
The car was created on the basis of the Soviet wheeled armored personnel carrier BTR-80 by the efforts of the staff of the state enterprise Zavod Tula in the mid-1980s. The main task of the designers was to maximize the use of the wide capabilities of the BTR chassis for installation on a mobile platform of the whole complex of instrumentation equipment.
The special equipment that was being created was to become the means of radiochemical reconnaissance of a new generation, replacing the obsolete RCM “Kashalot” and RCM-2C that were in service. Serial production was carried out at the Tula state-owned enterprise "Plant Tula" from 1986 to 1991. In total, 57 PXM-4-01 units were transferred to the armed forces. After the collapse of the USSR, in the troops of the radiation, chemical and biological protection of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is not more than 25 vehicles of this type.
