Austrian pistol Glock and its modifications

The Glock is a family of pistols designed for the needs of the Austrian army. "Glock" was the first model of weapons developed by the same company (Glock). The gun was quite successful and convenient to use, so that it was adopted by the Austrian army under the designation P80. The Glock pistols a little later became widely known, which was due to their fighting qualities and the frequent demonstration of these weapons in Hollywood films. Glock 17 combat pistol has become widespread in the world.

Today, there are many modifications of this gun, designed for various cartridges (.45ACP, .357 SIG, 10 mm auto, .40 S & W, 9 × 19 mm Parabellum and others). All models of Glock pistols differ only slightly in design from the basic model of Glock 17. Glock pistols differ in simple construction and low weight. Glock 17 includes only 33 parts, including a store, so it can be completely disassembled in less than a minute.

History of creation

After the end of the Second World War, the armed forces of Austria were armed with two main models of pistols - Walther P38 and Colt M1911A1. The Austrian police were equipped with Walther PPK and Walther PP, produced in pre-war times or in post-war years in France under license. To remedy this situation in 1980, a competition was launched to create a new pistol to equip the Austrian police and army.

The following requirements were made for the pistol:

  • ammunition 9 × 19 mm Parabellum;
  • the ability to control the gun with his left and right hand;
  • the minimum magazine capacity should be 8 rounds;
  • quick bringing the pistol into a firing position (so that there is no need to switch the fuse);
  • the possibility of disassembling and assembling without special equipment, simple design - the number of parts is not more than 58;
  • all parts within one model must be interchangeable without mutual fitting;
  • 10,000 shots no more than 20 delays;
  • weapons must preserve the functionality and integrity with temperature drops and external influences;
  • maximum safety for the shooter, the weapon should not shoot when falling on a steel plate from a height of 2 meters.

To compete for such a promising order, various manufacturers presented their designs for the competition. The application was also filed by the little-known company Glock, which was founded in Deutsch-Wagram in 1963. The company began its work with the production of bayonet knives, sapper shovels, belts and other ammunition for the Austrian army. However, in the 1970s, its designers began to develop the most simple, reliable and efficient pistol.

The company Glock has submitted a tender offer, which turned out to be 25% cheaper than its competitors. As a result, Glock’s drawings were recognized as the best. “Glock” in comparison with competitors had excellent characteristics. Pistol Glock 17 in 1983 adopted the Austrian army. Today Glock pistols are very common, they are in service with many countries of the world.

Features design Glock 17

  1. Automation on all models of the Glock pistol works on the basis of a short barrel stroke at recoil. Otherwise, the modifications differ only in the magazine capacity, caliber and barrel length (except for the Glock 18, which is capable of automatic shooting, its firing rate is 1100 shots / min).
  2. Attention deserves automatic fuse, combined with the trigger. Its shutdown occurs after simultaneously pressing the fuse and the trigger.
  3. The magazine extraction button is located on the left side of the frame below the trigger guard.
  4. Despite the store's high capacity, the Glock pistol is lighter than most competitors. This indicator is provided by the wide use of composite materials. Shops are also made of composites.
  5. The trigger guard is increased for the second finger when shooting with two hands.

Sights and other devices

Glock's weapons have sights made of plastic, they are made removable and are installed in the dovetail transverse grooves. For the convenience of aiming in low light, a luminous dot is applied to the front sight, and a luminous frame on the rear sight. The rear sight can be adjustable, but military models do not suggest them. The gun of this model since 1988 is equipped with a special guide for mounting a tactical flashlight or laser designator.

Weapons can also be equipped with a silencer.Only elite special forces officially possess this modification of this gun.
