1991 152-mm regimental howitzer 2A61 "Pat-B"

The Russian 152-mm regimental howitzer 2A61 "Pat-B" of the 1991 model is a high-power towed artillery system designed to break into the long-term line of enemy fortifications to the entire depth of the front. The gun can be used as an offensive and defensive firing means of supporting rifle subunits in the direct fire contact and long range.

The gun is on the equipment of artillery battalions and individual artillery regiments of motorized rifle divisions of the Russian army. The artillery system is designed for a first strike, which results in maximum damage to the long-term fortifications, the destruction of military equipment, equipment and personnel.

History of the 152-mm regimental howitzer 2A61 "Pat-B"

The Russian field regimental howitzer of 152 mm caliber was designed and developed by the design bureau of the Yekaterinburg Artillery Plant No. 9 Design Bureau. The team of military engineers and designers under the leadership of V.A. Golubeva was engaged in the development of this system for 3 years - from 1988 to 1991. The main reason for creating such an artillery system is the transition in the armies of the NATO countries to a single large caliber of 155 mm for field artillery. In such a situation, Soviet artillery units and subunits, which form the basis of rifle brigades and divisions armed with 122 mm howitzers, lost their firepower and strength.

The new howitzer, whose caliber it was decided to increase to 152 mm, was to eliminate this loss. After successful and comprehensive field tests, the howitzer was decided to adopt the Soviet Army under the name - 152-mm regimental howitzer 2A61 "Pat-B". However, due to the collapse of the Soviet Union, the new gun in 1991 became the first in the nomenclature of artillery systems of the new Russian army.
