According to Deputy Defense Minister Colonel-General Alexander Fomin, a group of 13 drones was controlled by the operators of the P-8A Poseidon marine reconnaissance aircraft, at the time of the raid near the Syrian borders in the airspace over the eastern Mediterranean. The total flight time of the reconnaissance aircraft on that day was 8 hours.
Having met the radiation of the Russian means of electronic suppression on its way, the control of the UAVs was transferred from automatic to manual mode, after which commands to the drones began to come from the board of the American aircraft.
Colonel-General A.Fomin also noted that the terrorists in Syria have the ability to control radio talks between the crews of Russian aircraft and control points on the ground. This indicates that the militants have special high-tech equipment that is impossible to produce "on their knees in the Syrian desert."
In addition, the commander expressed his attitude to the terrorists. “First, you can’t reach an agreement with terrorists - they only need to be destroyed. Second, there are no good and bad terrorists. Third, they need to be destroyed at distant approaches, and not wait for them to come to our house,” said A. Fomin.
For this reason, according to the deputy head of the Russian defense department, in response to the Syrian government’s appeal, in September 2015, the leadership of the Russian Federation decided to send the Aerospace Forces to provide military assistance.
