The US Department of Defense for the needs of the Navy ordered the construction of two nuclear aircraft carriers of the Gerald R. Ford type with board numbers CVN 80 and CVN 81. These will be the third and fourth aircraft carrier of this series. The cost of the contract is just over $ 15 billion.
The actual work on the preparation of the construction of the first of the CVN 80 Enterpise aircraft carriers was started in May 2016, and in 2017, designs and equipment have been manufactured for allied suppliers. The official start of construction of the CVN 80 Enterpise is scheduled for 2020, and its delivery to the US Navy is scheduled for 2028.
The second ordered carrier CVN 81 is scheduled for 2023 and is scheduled for delivery in 2032. The aircraft carriers CVN 80 and CVN 81 are to replace in the US Navy two nuclear aircraft carriers of the Nimitz type - CVN 69 Dwight D. Eisenhower and CVN 70 Carl Vinson.
Recall that the lead American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the new generation CVN 78 Gerald R. Ford, built on Huntington Ingalls Industries - Newport News Shipbuilding, was transferred to the US Navy on July 22, 2017. The second aircraft carrier of this type CVN 79 John F. Kennedy is under construction with an estimated deadline of 2024.
