Soviet 125-mm anti-tank self-propelled Sprit-B 2A45M 1987 1987 - a new word in field artillery

Soviet anti-tank 125 mm gun 2A45M "Sprut-B" was developed in the late 80s of the XX century. The gun was created by Soviet designers in the Petrov Design Bureau as a response to the appearance of new types of tanks in service with Western countries. The new gun was supposed to be an effective means of combating the latest foreign-made armored vehicles of foreign production: the American M-1 Abrams, the German Leopard 2, the French Leclerc and the Israeli Merkava BBM.

Adoption and design features

After a thorough check of the gun in the conditions of the military range, the gun 2А45М was put into service in 1889. Serial production was carried out at the Sverdlovsk plant number 9, which until that time produced tank guns for Soviet medium tanks T-72. In addition to high penetrating power, which was inherited from the tank gun D-81, the new anti-tank gun had a number of interesting design solutions. The installation on the gun carriage of the auxiliary power unit allowed the gun, together with the calculation, to quickly change its position, thereby avoiding return fire.

A large caliber and a smooth barrel make it possible to use the entire range of tank ammunition available to date, including sabot projectiles and guided missiles.

The gun is capable of fighting not only with heavily armored targets, but also used as a means of strengthening the rifle units on the battlefield.
To date, managed to release only 24 copies.

At the present time, due to the limited number of guns released, the 2A45M Sprut-B anti-tank gun is used as an experimental stand on which the actions of the anti-tank gun system are being worked out in modern conditions. The subsequent development of this weapon are self-propelled artillery installations, for which today remains a priority in equipping the armed forces.
