Russian sniper rifle SV-98

The SV-98 is a Russian non-automatic sniper rifle developed by a group of designers under the direction of V. Stronsky in the late 90s. It is currently being produced at Izhmash. The rifle is designed to destroy the enemy's manpower, both unprotected and having means of individual armor protection.

Production SV-98 was deployed in 2004, a year earlier, it was put into service. Currently, the sniper rifle SV-98 is operated by special units of the FSB, FSO and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. These weapons are being watched at by the Ministry of Defense, and it is possible that in the future, the SV-98 will replace the deserved, but already outdated, SVD sniper rifle. In 2010, more than 50 units of CB-98 were purchased by Armenia.

How was created SV-98

Sniper rifle SV-98 was created on the basis of the Soviet sports rifle "Record", developed in 1972. Rather, one of the later modifications of this weapon is the Record-SIZM. This rifle was created after the collapse of the USSR, especially for the Russian national team CSKA. It should be noted that this way of creating a combat sniper rifle is by no means unique: the creators of Blaser R93 Tactical followed exactly the same path.

Differences CB-98 from "Sizm" are very small - detachable magazine for ten rounds, a thicker threaded barrel to install PBS. In addition, CB-98 has a fuse (it is not on the "Record-Sizm"), a bipod and a carrying handle. The standard modification of the rifle, in addition to the universal bracket for mounting an optical sight, has open sights.

A new sniper rifle, and even for a standard 7.62 × 54 mm cartridge, naturally, interested the military. In addition, the prototype ("SIZM"), on the basis of which the SV-98 was created, provided the new weapon with excellent accuracy.

The fact is that until now the main sniper rifle of the Russian army is the SVD, which, with all its indisputable advantages, has long been morally obsolete. If the Russian military personnel have an excellent “Vintorez” rifle for silent shooting, and at long distances you can use the WWS-98 or KSVK, then the niche of the main sniper weapon remained vacant. The SVD is one hundred percent brainchild of the Cold War era, when generals were preparing for epic battles involving millions of armies. The SVD even has a bayonet mount that today can only cause a mockery. This rifle is very strong, reliable, with excellent rate of fire, but its accuracy of fire clearly does not meet modern requirements.

Today, army snipers are trained in special centers, where they are not only taught to shoot, but also familiar with the tactics of sniper units, the basics of disguise, and many other tricks. A well-trained shooter needs and appropriate weapons. For fighters of special units usually buy overseas sniper complexes, but with mass weapons for army snipers in Russia is still a disaster.

While the decision to adopt the SV-98 rifle is not. Although, this rifle would be perfect for the Armed Forces. One of its main advantages is the use of standard ammunition for the SVD rifle (7.62 × 54 mm R). Establishing the production of new cartridges for sniper weapons - the task is very difficult and quite expensive. Her decision could take years. In addition, CB-98 can not be called a completely new weapon. She is perfectly familiar to Russian athletes and instructors who have studied it thoroughly over the years of training.

In 2013, the rifle was upgraded. She received a bed and a butt made of aluminum alloy, as well as additional fasteners for attachments and PBS new design, which made the sound of the shot even quieter.

Description of construction

The SV-98 is a non-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine and a sliding bolt that locks into three lugs. Naturally, in terms of its rate of fire, it is inferior to self-loading rifles of the SVD type, but it significantly surpasses them in firing accuracy. The operation of automation always causes additional fluctuations, which most negatively affects the effectiveness of the sniper weapon.

The barrel and chamber of the rifle are made from one piece by cold forging. The barrel is made on the equipment of the Austrian company GFM, the whole process is fully automated and controlled by a computer. Even the installation and removal of the barrel produces a robot. After forging, it is aged for some time, so that the stresses inside the metal are gone, then the honing process follows, and only after that the barrel is sent for heat treatment. The barrel bore is not covered with chrome, which somewhat reduces its vitality, but it has a very positive effect on the accuracy of shooting. At the end of the barrel there are fasteners for installing the muzzle brake or muffler.

The silencer does not degrade the accuracy of the SV-98; moreover, it makes it more comfortable, reducing the recoil by about a third.

The barrel and receiver are connected with pins. In this case, the barrel does not apply to the rifle box - such a solution is quite common for sniper weapons. Thus, the grip of the weapon does not affect the aiming point, which is quite important for high-precision shooting. The CB-98 bed is made of aviation plywood, there is a groove for a folding bipod, and in the central part there is a handle for convenient transportation of the weapon.

The design is attached to the cradle with two screws. CB-98 has an adjustable butt plate and an emphasis under the cheek, they are adjusted to the individual features of the shooter. The bed of the latest modifications of the rifle are made of aluminum alloy. The rifle's handguard has two vents, the pistol grip has a notch.

CB-98 has a trigger mechanism (USM) with adjustable descent force, which is typical of a sports weapon. The rifle is equipped with a two-position fuse that simultaneously blocks both the bolt and trigger. It is located in the back of the receiver, on its right side, next to the bolt handle. Reloading rifle hand-type, it can only conduct a single fire.

Power rifle comes from the detachable magazine, the capacity of which is ten rounds. The store has a hole to determine the presence of cartridges, as well as a guiding mechanism that allows you to adjoin it "blindly." A two-row rifle shop, it is made of durable plastic (polyamide), has metal inserts. The magazine attachment mechanism is more reliable than the SVD rifle.

CB-98 has open sights, which consist of a front sight in a namushnik and an open, regulated rear sight with a scale of one hundred to six hundred meters, in increments of one hundred meters. However, the main sighting device is an optical sight. This rifle has a method of mounting the "optics" different from the well-known "dovetail", which is used on the SVD. At the top of the receiver is the mounting plate on which you can install the 7-fold sight PKS-07 or more powerful "Hyperon". In addition, several types of night and thermal imaging sights can be used to fire at night.

The standard equipment includes the following items: a handle and a carrying strap, a low-noise firing device, an anti-tide tape for the barrel, a special kozvyrek-reflector for the muffler, a set for cleaning and caring for weapons, a bracket for installing an optical sight.

Accuracy

The rifle has excellent accuracy and allows for quite effective fire at distances of up to 800 meters. At a distance of 300 meters, it is 0.5-0.7 angular minutes, which allows the shooter to confidently “put” the bullets in a circle of diameters of 76-78 mm. For comparison: the SVD at the same distance gives a variation of 15-17 cm. A good shooter, using special ammunition, can hit a growth target at a distance of 1200 meters. It should be noted that from the SVD at a distance of 800 meters, it is possible to conduct only "disturbing" fire.

Compared to the SVD, the SV-98 rifle has large dimensions, which in some situations can be a problem (for example, in mountainous areas). Attitude to the new rifle at the fighters is still a little wary because of its untested time and operation. Often, the CB-98 is treated like a rifle for a competition.

Modifications

There are several modifications of the rifle:

  • The basic modification of the SV-98 chambered for caliber 7.62 × 54mm R.
  • CB-98M-338 is a prototype weapon developed in 2000 under the patron of .338 Lapua Magnum.
  • KO-13 "Record" is a civilian modification of the weapon, the limited-edition production of which began on Izhmash in 2010. The main difference of this modification is the absence of fastening for the muffler on the barrel of the rifle and the carrying handle.
  • Upgraded rifle with a box and a duralumin alloy stock. This option is more ergonomic, has less weight.
  • Export modification under the NATO cartridge 7.62 × 51mm (.308 Win).
  • A modification of the rifle with a lightweight skeleton type bed, folding bipods, an adjustable black plastic butt and a new DH 3-12x50 optical sight, on which you can install the Dedal-TA2 thermal imaging nozzle. This version of the CB-98 was demonstrated at the arms exhibition Eurosatory-2014, which was held in Paris.
