History of creation

The development of the car began in the 60s of the last century. In the design process, there were two outstanding personalities: first - Zavorotny, and then he was replaced by Samples. Work led Prosvirin. The basis of the truck was taken Gaz-62, which was released in 1958.

The basis of the new truck formed multiple unique structural solutions. The engine Gas-66 - 8-cylinder V-shaped, in the Soviet Union it was used for the first time. The truck accelerates to 90 kilometers per hour. You can independently remove the speed limiter, then you can accelerate to 110-120 kilometers per hour. Experts do not recommend carrying out such actions, as the working life of the motor is significantly reduced.

Initially, the transport was designed for off-road driving. All specifications correspond to driving on such roads. The fuel consumption of Gas-66 is 20-25 liters per 100 kilometers, all in all on Gas-66 diesel and gasoline there are two tanks per 105 liters. A full tank provides 800 kilometers.

The design of the rear axle Gas-66 is represented by the following parts: crankcase, modular gearbox, two semi-axles and two trunnions. The gearbox is located in the crankcase: for it there is a special thickening. It provides the optimum wheel speed for a particular road surface.

In order for bridges to work many thousands of kilometers without breakdowns, the following procedures must be performed:

  • Check the availability and quality of oil in the crankcase;
  • Lubrication of constant velocity joints;
  • Control of knot tightening;
  • Control the flow of mazlov from nodes.

When operating the vehicle on public roads, it is recommended to change the oil in the bridges every 50-70 thousand kilometers. If the machine is used to move on roadless conditions, change the oil more often. After crossing deep water obstacles, it is recommended to change the oil as soon as possible: in case of bridge leakage, water will mix with oil.

Front axle holds 7.7 liters of oil, rear - 6.4 liters. In the center of the crankcase there is a hole through which the old mixture is drained. Filling with oil takes place through the control hole, which is located on the side of the gearbox. For refueling use a syringe. Fill until oil begins to pour out of the hole.

Car handling

Driving on complete off-road is possible thanks to the drive on both axles and the use of self-locking differentials. Ground clearance - 31.5 centimeters, thanks to him, you can overcome obstacles of impressive size, including fords and small rivers. The system of automatic pressure control in tires sets the optimum value for the road surface.

For braking meets the hydraulic mechanism with a vacuum booster. Such equipment does not allow braking when the engine is off, therefore, it will not be possible to move downhill to save fuel. Convenient operation provided power steering.

Gas-66 dump truck has an excellent balancing: the entire load is distributed on both axles equally. When jumping from small springboards and hills, the car lands on all wheels at once, therefore, it is widely used in the military industry.

Versions and use in the army

The design of Gas-66 makes transport versatile. It moves on any roads, it can transport both simple cargo and people. On the basis of the standard modification, many others were built: for the construction and military industries. For all the time of production about a million cars were produced.

The truck has been used in aviation: at some aerodromes it is used for the movement of airplanes. On some heavy cruisers it is used to transport cargo through the ship. The main feature is the use in aviation. A balanced center of gravity and landing on all wheels immediately allow you to parachute a truck from an airplane onto any territory.

In the design of standard vehicles were modified in the 80s. Then the engine was improved, the brake system was changed and a new light optics was installed. The first batch of updated dump trucks rolled off the assembly line in 1985. Production was halted in 1999, but to this day the production of limited quantities under state orders takes place.
