By the end of 2019, the PTM-5 “smart” mine will be tested in the Russian Federation. The developed ammunition will distinguish armed people from civilians and this will undoubtedly lead to a reduction in civilian casualties.
According to the director general of the Research Institute of Engineering Igor Smirnov, the mine will be triggered by armored vehicles and armed men. She will be able to distinguish a soldier from civilians caught in the mined sector.
Talk about creating a "smart" mines began in the domestic press in 2015. And two years later, at one of the landfills, located near the city of Krasnoarmeysk, a POM-3 "Medallion" mine was tested. It received its name because of the appearance of the damaging elements, made in the form of gears, the teeth of which fly apart in different directions at the time of the explosion.
POM-3 "Medallion" is a cylinder made of metal, with a diameter of 70 mm in diameter and a height of 200 mm. Its design includes a contactless fuse that responds to the readings of the vibroseis indicator.
A set of special electronics receives data on the vibration of the soil under the ammunition and compares them with the information stored in the memory. If the vibration is similar to the characteristics of the target, there is an undermining of the charge, ejecting the warhead to a height of the order of one meter, after that an explosion of the actual striking charge, stuffed with gears, occurs.
