Sledgehammer versus German heavy tanks - 1944 Soviet 100-mm field gun BS-3

The Soviet BS-3 100-mm field gun of the 1944 model is a powerful and versatile towed artillery system designed to solve a wide range of tactical tasks on the battlefield. Possessing high ballistic characteristics, the weapon could be used to combat armored mobile targets, to destroy the fortified positions and enemy firing points in the offensive zone.

The history of the creation of 100 mm bunches BS-3

The second half of the Great Patriotic War was marked by the appearance of a large number of heavy tanks Pz.Kpfw.VI "Tiger" and medium tanks Pz.Kpfw.V "Panther" as a part of enemy tank formations. The ZiS-3 divisional guns and the ZiS-2 anti-tank guns available on the equipment of Soviet artillerymen could not always successfully fight with enemy well-armored vehicles. It required a weapon with a huge punching ability, capable of hitting heavy German tanks at a long distance.

Soviet designers in search of technical solutions turned their attention to naval artillery. To create a powerful new gun as a technical base was selected naval gun B-34. The design work on the conversion of the naval gun to the land version was carried out under the direction of V.G. Grabin during the whole of 1943 in besieged Leningrad. As a result, in the spring of 1944, a new field 100-mm cannon was presented to a high state commission and adopted by the artillery units of the Red Army. The weapon went into the series under the name - BS-3 100-mm field gun of the sample of 1944, GAU index - 52-P-412.
