Thirty years in Afghan captivity: Ukrainian warrior-internationalist returned home

Three decades later, the missing ensign Igor Belokurov returned home from Afghanistan. About this on its official Facebook page reports the command of the airborne troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

A native of the Volyn region, Ensign Igor Belokurov took part in the hostilities in Afghanistan as part of the assault battalion of the 70th separate guards motorized rifle brigade. He went missing on April 9, 1988 during a battle in the Afghan province of Kandahar. The fighter was captured, converted to Islam and started a family. Over the long years of living in a foreign land, he forgot his native language. In the Ukrainian Union of Afghan Veterans, they believe that the cause was the severe concussion that Belokurov received.

Return after 30 years of separation

The former warrant officer of the Soviet Army was found absolutely by accident: a Ukrainian geological expedition stumbled upon it, looking for new water horizons in Afghanistan. In March of this year, geologists learned from a local about a Soviet soldier living in one of the villages. The man called himself Amriddin and said that he was from Volyn. It was one of the few words that the former ensign could even say in Ukrainian. Later in the archives the identity of the soldier was established.

Last week, Igor returned to his homeland, where his mother still lives. For several decades a woman tried to find out at least something about the fate of her son, but then she despaired and even arranged a semblance of a grave at a local cemetery. True, it is unknown whether he will remain in Ukraine or return to Afghanistan.
